VITAL RECORDS OF STONINGTON, CT, Vol. 2, page 2.
Eleazer Brown, son of Eleazer, born 4 May 1698.

THE BROWN GENEALOGY, Vol. II, by Cyrus Henry Brown, pages 266.

Sources: Brown Genealogy, Vol. II; Stonington vitals, film 1,309,871,Item 2; North Stonington Congregational Church records, film 5,080, Item1; and film 2,826; Stonington Church, film 547,548; Barbour Collection ofCT Vitals, film 2897; Brian Pendleton and His Descendants, compiled byEverett Hall Pendleton (Film 1,018,879, Item 18); IGI (Batch #7213008,Sheet #02, Source Call #820,349.

Barbour: Eleazer Brown, son of Eleazer, born 4 May 1698 (Stoningtonvitals, v2, p2).
Vitals, Brown Genealogy and Wheeler's History of Stonington agree onEleazer Junior's birth date and place.
Wheeler: Married Temperance Holmes in 1723.
Film 1,309,871, Item 2, page 69: Names birth dates of children andsays earmarks were entered 26 April 1738. No marriage recorded.
Film 2826: Gives baptismal date. Stonington First Church. Admitted tochurch in what is now North Stonington on May 7, 1727.
    Film 547,548, Item 2: Baptized 14 Aug. 1698.
Film 5,080, Item 1: Records from 1727 to 1827. This church opened in1727. Lists baptisms for six of Eleazer's children: Eleazer, Jeremiah,Mary, Rebecca, Temperance, and Peleg. In each case his wife was calledMary.
Brown, p266, cites New London Probate Records, Vol. G, p. 179, 2Dec.1757. Heirs mentioned: Widow Mary Brown (indicating a second wife)Jeremiah Brown, 2nd son (1st son Nathan died at the age of 2); Eleazer, first son; John Butler and wife Mary, eldest daughter; Rebeckah, thirddaughter; Timothy, third son; John, fourth son; Peleg, fifth son; ComfortBrown and wife Temperance, second daughter; Phebe Brown, fourth daughter;Ruth Brown, fifth daughter.
The Brown Cemetery in North Stonington has no grave recorded for thisEleazer or his wives. The Stonington Historical Society reports: "Quiteoften before the 1770's they used only a crude fieldstone to mark agrave. Head-
stones were for the really well-to-do or the well-organized." Thegravestones for Eleazer and Ann Pendleton Brown were erected many yearsafter their deaths by a descendant. This could account for Ann's birthdate info on the
tombstone not jibing with other sources.
Stonington Cemeteries, film 3,096: A Mary Brown died 20 Nov. 1785,Cemetery 47, p353. Stonington Historical Society reports this Mary Brownwas the daughter of Stephen and Hannah Brown. Apparently she nevermarried.
Wheeler in Brown section of his book says Eleazer Brown and TemperanceHolmes, both of Stonington, were married in 1723. In the Holmes section,he says a Temperance Holmes, born 29 Jan. 1707, daughter of Joshua, married (1) 10 May 1727 John Smith and (2) James Treadway. Joshua livedin what is now North Stonington. [Apparently two Temperance Holmes.]Colonial Families of America, Vol. 4, page 467, says a Temperance, daughter of Joshua Holmes, born 29 Jan. 1707, married John Smith ofGroton 10 May 1727. He was born 14 June 1704 and died 22 Dec. 1758. [Seenotes for this Temperance Holmes, RIN 97. She died after 10 Dec. 1761.That was the day she married her second husband--many years after theother Temperance had presumably died.]]
Brown Genealogy has the same info as Wheeler in his Brown section, butformer says info is from Stonington town records. Both say Eleazer andTemperance were married in 1723.
An IGI record gives a 1 June 1728 (typo?) marriage date, married inStonington Township. Everett Hall Pendleton says they were married in1723 and that Temperance was Eleazer's first wife and Mary ________ washis second.
Mary was on the scene 14 Nov. 1736, according to records of the NorthStonington Congregational Church. Rebecca was born 19 Jan. 1735--22months earlier. That date is from two films on Stonington vitals. Browngenealogy and Wheeler say 19 June 1735. Transcribing error? June becameJan or Jan became June. Assuming Mary was Eleazer's second wife, shewould be the mother of Phebe, Timothy, John, Peleg and Ruth (all bornbetween
4 July 1737 and 27 June 1749). Temperance Brown, presumably, would be thedaughter of Temperance (Holmes) Brown. Jeremiah and Rebecca probably werethe children of Temperance also, but one or both could be Mary's, sincewe have found no marriage record for Eleazer and Mary. [I will allot thechildren through Rebecca to Temperance.]

Regardless, it appears Mary was my Peleg's mother.

Records of Rev. Joseph Fish of the Congregational Church of NorthStonington say Eleazer II was a church member before 1 July 1733 and hiswife Mary was received into the church and baptized 24 Oct. 1742. It alsosays Eleazer II and wife Mary "received baptism" 14 Nov. 1736, same dayas five Brown children. Church records state that Eleazer, Jeremiah,Rebecca, Mary and Temperance were baptized 14 Nov. 1736 and werechildren of Eleazer Brown and wife Mary and that Peleg Brown, son ofEleazer and wife Mary, was baptized 16 Dec. 1744.

[North Stonington Church records also say an Eleazer Brown of Westerly,R.I., married Sarah Die, 10 Nov. 1742. This, according to Everett HallPendleton, was Eleazer, son of Jonathan Brown and Elizabeth Pendleton, who probably died in the French and Indian War.]

Wheeler cites New London Probate Records, Vol. G, p. 170, 2 Dec. 1757.(This doesn't jibe with the tombstone death date). Heirs mentioned: WidowMary Brown (indicating a second wife); Jeremiah Brown, second son (firstson Nathan died at the age of 2); Eleazer, first son; John Butler andwife Mary, eldest daughter; Rebeckah, third daughter; Timothy, third son;John, fourth son; Peleg, fifth son; Comfort Brown and wife Temperance, second daughter; Phebe Brown, fourth daughter; Ruth Brown, fifthdaughter.

A Stonington deed, info from John Henderson, says Lt. John Ashcraftsold a
small quantity of Stonington land to Elizor Brown. This was mentioned ina land record dated 15 June 1717 in which Ashcraft sold a tract of land, less the small quantity previously sold to "Elizor" Brown, to PeterBelton of Groton. The Elizor could refer to either Eleazer Brown Jr. orSr.

THE BROWN GENEALOGY, Boston, The Everett Press Company 1907, by CyrusHenry Brown, page 18.
Elder Eleazer Brown(139), son of Eleazer (39) [Eleazer (11),Thomas], was born in Stonington, Conn., June 1, 1728 and died July 11,1795 (tombstone), sisty-eight year of his age and twenty-seventh of hisministry. He married Oct. 16, 1755, Ann Green, of Hopkinton, RI, who wasborn 1735 and died Sept. 15, 1803, sisty-ninth year of her age.

THE BROWN GENEALOGY, by Cyrus Herny Brown, Vol. 2, page 267.
Elder Brown was the second pastor of the First Baptist Church, ofStonington (Pendleton Hill). This was his only pastorate, extending overa period of twenty-seven years. Elder Brown, it is said, had be littleeducation, but was a man of strong native powers, of vivid thought andconception, and of flowing, rapid delivery. He was rightly esteemed oneof the most eminet preachers of his day. In 1791, towards the close ofhis ministry, there came a great outpouring of the Spirit of God; and theseed faithfully sown began to bear much fruit, and at this revival thechurch received an accession of fifty-two, making the total membershipone hundred and fifty-two. (For a full account, see B.G., pp. 551, 552.
Elder Eleazer Brown's house stood a few rods east of the BrownBurying-ground, opposite the present parsonage of the Second Church, inNo. Stonington, where the cellar is still to be seen. This house wasstruck by lightning while Elder Brown was preaching in the near-bychurch. Two young people were killed by lightning, one up stairs and theother down, while shutting windows. The compiler's mother said they wereengaged to be married. Another mother reported that they were John andHulda, but it is not certain about their names.

CT births: Born 26 Sept. 1744. Stonington vitals, v3, p69. [Doesn'tjibe with tombstone. See Eleazer II notes for mention of this problem.]
History of Leyden: Peleg Brown was an early settler--"1st settler nearW. Leyden mill site" on the River Road. Earliest he could have come toLeyden would be 1775, the book indicates. He was listed in the 1790census for
Leyden, MA., and the 1800 New York census for Otsego County, NY. The areawhere he bought property in 1797 is now West Winfield, Herkimer County.
DAR cemetery list from Gen. Winfield Scott Chapter in 1928 says Pelegis buried in an old overgrown cemetery in the southern part of the townof Winfield, in a dense grove near the old Lewis Day homestead.
    Tombstone information:
Mr. Peleg Brown, d. Jan 26, 1814, ae 71 yrs.
Experience Brown, w. of Mr. Peleg Brown, d. June 16, 1852, ae 95 yrs.
[This indicates Peleg was born about 1742. Brown says he was born 26Sept. 1744, and Wheeler says 26 Sept. 1749. Various vitals say 1744 andchurch baptismal date is 14 Dec. 1744. This indicates the tombstone ageof
death is off a couple of years.
[Peleg has been confused with Peleg Brown of Stonington (not NorthStonington), a native of Rhode Island who married Mercy/Marcy Denison. This Peleg, who died 13 April 1796, was an officer during theRevolutionary War, while my Peleg was a private.]
Also buried in West Winfield is son Eleazer Brown III, who died in1866, and his wife, Martha "Patty" Clark, who died in 1825. Eleazer IIIand Experience were named to administer Peleg's will. In 1810 Pelegapparently had three sons at home: two 16-26 and one 26, according to thecensus that year.

The cemetery property is now owned by the Tennessee Gas Co. It hasbeen cleared of all but one tombstone, Peleg's. His was left at theinsistence of the DAR because he was a Revolutionary War veteran, thetown historian said. Peleg served only a six-month hitch, July 1 to Dec.31, 1780, in the 5th Connecticut Regiment, Capt. Joseph Wright's company.Peleg was a private.
The Continental Army Linages book says the 5th Connecticut was in the2nd Connecticut Brigade when the brigade was relieved Nov. 27, 1780, fromthe Main Army and assigned to the Highlands Department. Perhaps this iswhy Peleg was mustered out early on Dec. 13, 1780.
Record of Services: List of levies in the 5th Regiment, ConnecticutLine, in 1780 says Peleg Brown enlisted 1 July 1780 and was discharged 13Dec. 1780.
Land records say three sons--Benjamin F. Brown (wife Polly), GustavusA. Brown (wife Sophonia), and Jessie* Brown (wife Hannah)--along withwife Experience sold some of Peleg's property after his death. Thisindenture very confusing re Gustavus' name. First mention says GustavusA., second says Augustus A. and the third Gustavus A. again. BrownGenealogy, Vol. II, says his name is Adolphus. Also mentioned in theindenture is Benjamin F. Brown, while B.G. says Franklin. Assume thenames are Gustavus Adolphus Brown and
    Benjamin Franklin Brown.

*In other sources all references are to various Jesse Browns.

The Eleazer Brown in Winfield "in 1792" (cited in History of HerkimerCounty, 1879) has to be Peleg's son, Eleazer III. The date must be anerror. Timothy Smith's book, "An Intimate History of Winfield", saysEleazer III came to W.W. about 1800. He would have been about 21 then.Harden's History of Herkimer County says Eleazer was one of the firstsettlers in West Winfield. Both history books and Brown Genealogy, Vol.II, say Eleazer III had a son Hiram, a grandson Hiram C. and agreat-grandson H.C. Brown.
Peleg's half-brother, Elder Eleazer, was 21 years older than Peleg, never moved to New York and died in 1795. Therefore, he could not be the1792 Eleazer. He was minister of the First Baptist Church in Stonington.
His son, Elder Eleazer Brown, also a minister, moved to Brookfield(which is near West Winfiedl and now is in Madison Co.), N.Y., andfathered a distinguished line.
Lineage Book XXVI, National Society, Daughters of the AmericanRevolution, Page 161, says Peleg and Experience were married Dec. 14,1802. Must be an error since their third child was born in 1770 or 1775and first
child was named Experience, making it improbable that Experience wasPeleg's second wife.
Film 1,023,771: Sale of land Dec. 7, 1797, by Thomas R. Clark ofRichfield, Otsego County, N.Y., to Peleg Brown, Richfield, for $1,050.The 107 acres, located in Richfield, was part of the Schuyler Patent andMorgan's Purchase.
Before 1816 the territory now embracing the town of West Winfield wasa part of the towns of Richfield and Plainfield, Otsego County. In 1816county boundary lines were changed and West Winfield wound up in HerkimerCounty. This makes land sale records confusing. A sale executed in OtsegoCounty before the 1816 change often was not recorded until many yearslater--in Otsego County. So a sale of property in Otsego county in 1815would be recorded in 1820 in Otsego County records even though theproperty was then in Herkimer County.

Checking records in Leyden involves several jurisdictions. Leydenoriginally was in Bernardston, but it was set off as the town of Leydenin 1784. At that time it was in Hampshire County, Mass. In 1811, however,Franklin County, was formed from Hampshire County, with Leyden winding upin Franklin County.
History of the Town of Bernardston, Vol. 1, p252 (974.22/Bl, H2h):Elisha Clarke and Peleg Brown appeared on the Bernardston town rate in1781--each one poll., and each living in the area that later becameLeyden.

THE BROWN GENEALOGY, Vol. II, by Cyrus Henry Brown, pages 268.
It is not exactly known when Eleazer Brown removed to the State ofNew York, but in New York land papers of recordes of petitions for andgrants of land are found many familier names around Brookfield, Edmestonand Columbus. Eleaxer Brown had a certificate of purchase of 250 acresDec. 1, 1790, for lot 84, township 19. Also Simeon Brown, Jr., lot 81,250 acres. He settled at Brookfield. Jabish Brown had a certificate ofpurchase in 1791, in Chenango Township, of 500 acres. These three earlysettlers were nexr relatives, going from their hometown, Stonington, atdifferent times.* Thus it would appear that Eleaxer Brown settled atBrookfield.
*Om "Otsego County HIstory of New York" is found the following records:"In 1795 Eleazer Brown settled in Brookfield, NY. The family consisted ofwife and seven children."

THE BROWN GENEALOGY, Vol. II, 1915, by Cyrus Henry Brown, pages 289.
They eloped when married. Mr. Brown, after the death of his wife, moved to Litchfield, and later to Lisle, NY, finally settling atBinghamton, NY, on a farm that now joins land where the State Hospitalstands. In 1864 Mr. Brown sold his farm and went to live with his oldestson, Hiram, at West Winfield, Herkimer Co., NY. He was a Baptist in hisearly years, but took exceptions to two of the ministers, and justly so,and left the church. It is said he was a good student of the Bible, buthe measured the whole church by the peculiar ideas of the two ministers. He is buried on the old farm at West Winfield, with his father andmother.

BG: Eleazer Brown, born at Leyden, Mass., 17 Nov. 1779. (Leyden atthat time time was in Hampshire County, but in 1811 it was in the areadesignated as Franklin County.)

1850 New York census: From Chenango town. Page 386. Eleazer III islisted as a farmer, with real estate valued at $5,000. On the same censuspage are:
Son Eleazer IV, farmer; wife Rachel, 25, and daugher Mary, 3.
Son German S. Brown (but recorded erroneously as German P. Brown) withwife and children. Listed as a farmer.
Son Peleg M. Brown, 35, farmer, $2,000 in real estate; wife Lura, 22,and daughter Ellen E., 4.

1855 New York census, film No. 809,005, lists:
Jerome Brown, 29, b. Herkimer Co., New York, and residing in town(later Binghamton), for 21 years.
Eleazer Brown III, German S. Brown, Peleg M. Brown and Eleazer BrownIV, all residing in town for 22 years and all born in Herkimer County.Actually Eleazer III was born in Massachusetts, another census error.
This 1855 census information is on a single page coming afterBinghamton entries, indicating all lived near each other. It accounts forfour of Eleazer III's sons. Hiram bought West Winfield land from Eleazeron July 2, 1834, so he apparently had returned to Herkimer County before1855 to live. A Chauncey Brown, 37, farmer, was found in 1850 census forLisle, Broome County. This is probably the sixth son because BrownGenealogy, Vol. 2, says Chauncey (no birthdate listed), died at Lisle in1853. Eleazer III distributed much of his Broome County property to hissix sons, according to county land records. Films 573101, 573104, 573095and 573091.

An Intimate History of Winfield by Thomas W. Smith (1979) says Eleazercame to West Winfield about 1800 from Connecticut. (His father, Peleg, purchased his W.W. land in 1797.) Smith says he settled there on "thelarge acreage, a part of Cochran's patent. Its lands straddled that earlyroadway which crosses westerly to Woods Corners and which is littlechanged today. Very likely that road was there before the right of waywas established of Burrows Road, as it runs on down to the swamp."Eleazer's Cape Cod house was still standing in 1990.

History of Herkimer County, 1879, says Eleazer arrived about 1792,but this must be an error. He would have been only about 13 years old,and the date is five years before Peleg purchased his property. But the1879 book does say Eleazer was one of the first settlers in West Winfield. According to Leyden, Mass., marriage records, he was living inRichfield, later West Winfield, in 1798. He probably came with his father, who bought land in 1797.

Both "History of Herkimer County" by Harden and Brown Genealogy say Eleazer had a son Hiram, a grandson H. Clark Brown and a great-grandson H.C. Brown.

Eleazer III is buried in a cemetery on the old family farm. Theproperty is now owned by the Tennessee Gas Co., which has constructed a pumping station to pump natural gas to New England. Smith says thecemetery "was for many years overgrown with wild roses, brambles and berry bushes. The Tennessee Gas Company restored it, set up the fallen stones and fenced it in when establishing the plant there." Subsequentlythe company said it was difficult to maintain the cemetery and received permission to bury the headstones and mark the cemetery's corners. Perhaps, also, it wanted to discourage visitors, thus reducing liability problems in case of injuries.
One headstone, Peleg Brown's, stands in the middle of the cemetery site. He was a Revolutionary War veteran, and Daughters of the AmericanRevolution members complained until the company agreed to leave the stone. A bronze plaque listing some information from the headstones wasplaced at the site. (Eleazer's birth date is off by 20 years.)

Film No. 836,761, Page 26, of Vol. 15, DAR records (Winfield ScottChapter, 1928) says: "Old overgrown cemetery in the southern part of thetown of Winfield, Herkimer Co., New York. It is in a dense grove near theold Lewis Day homestead." Tombstone information includes:

    Eleazer Brown d. June 8, 1866, age 87 years.
Patty Brown, wife of Eleazer Brown, d. Feb. 8, 1825, age 47 years.
Mr. Peleg Brown d. Jan. 26, 1814, age 71 years.
Experience Brown, wife of Mr. Peleg Brown, d. June 16, 1852, age 92years.

Eleazer and his mother, Experience, were named to administer Peleg'sestate.

Brown Genealogy, Vol. II, says Eleazer III and Martha "Patty" Clarkeloped. Not so. Leyden town records show they filed an intention of marriage with the town clerk and later were married by the Baptist minister. At this time (1799) Eleazer was residing in Richfield, Otsego County, N.Y. The area later became West Winfield, Herkimer County, N.Y.
After her death in 1825 he moved to Litchfield, Herkimer Co., andlater to Lisle, Broome County, (dropping off son Chauncey?) and finally settling (1833) in Chenango (now Binghamton), Broome County, N.Y. There his farm joined land where the state hospital now stands. Sometime before1833 he married Affa Wilcox. After her death, he sold his farm in 1864 and went to live with his oldest son, Hiram, in West Winfield. Eleazer apparently was well cared for by Hiram's wife Susan because he named herin his will and decreed she have a share of his estate equal to those of his heirs at law.

Film No. 836,759, Page 195, says Eleazer was admitted to the UnadillaForks Branch of the Free-Communion Baptist Church of Plainfield, nearWest Winfield, Herkimer County, in November 1803. He was elected sixth trustee on 12 March 1807, but he was excommunicated on 1 June 1815. The church minutes for 6 July 1815 do not report a cause for Eleazer's excommunication. But Brown Genealogy, Vol. 2, states: "He was a Baptist in his early years, but took exceptions to two of the ministers, and justly so, and left the church. It was said he was a good student of the Bible, but he measured the whole church by the peculiar ideas of the two ministers."
How did this descendant of early Massachusetts settlers, probably Puritans, wind up a Baptist?

Prentice Brown followed a blazed trail from Stonington, Conn.through New York State into Otsego County. He was a blacksmith.
page 269. Note -- While it is said that Prentice Brown was born atStonington, I am inclined to believe that it was his father, Eleazer, whoblazed the trail into New York State when it was comparatively one vastwilderness, in the last half of 1700. Eleazer, with Simeon Brown, Jr., ismentioned as a pioneer to New York State in this same connection in 1791.Therefore I believe that Prentice Brown was born in Madison Co., NY.Stonington, Conn., at this time, one hundred years after the three Brownbrothers made their settlement in this wilderness, had become verythickly settled, and every acre of available land was unter cultivation, and the same spirit of adverture crowded these sons of Elder EleazerBrown from their home town, Stonington, to seek new and cheaper land andmore productive in the west -- "out west, " it was then called.
It was with much difficulty and long research that the compilerlocated these brothers, -- Eleazer, Benjamin, and Luther, -- for norecords are left of where such adventurers fled to.

Date of Letters, Aug. 11, 1884, Letters of Administration, Book 3, Page345.
Brown says Peleg M. born in 1814, which jibes closely with 1855 censusbelow,
so DAR reading of tombstone (below) may be an error.

1855 census says Peleg was 38, b. Herkimer Co., and lived in Broome Co.22
years, so presumably he left Herkimer in 1833. 1855 census says wife Lura
    also was born in Herkimer.

    Peleg Brown d. April 6, 1884, ae 79 (Born 1804 or 1805? A typo by DAR?If

    Notes:
Two reports about him: Operated a livery stable in Binghamton, N.Y.
Also, "lost at sea." Can't confirm either. 1850 census says he was afarmer.
Most family information comes from Edna Brown Foster, daughter of WilliamW.
Brown. That information with Louis B. Bate, Bountiful, Utah.
Believed married about 1844, since daughter Georgianna was born in1845.
Also, that is the year, 1855 census says, that Caroline came to BroomeCo.
Probably married in New Milford, Pa., or Chenango, Broome County, N.Y.
He is found in the 1850 New York census. Film No. 017054, Page 386,Line 28, Chenango, last on the reel. Three other Browns on the same page:Eleazer, 72, farmer; Eleazer Jr., 27, farmer; and Peleg M., 35, farmer. All born
in New York. They would be his father and two brothers. Brown Gen., Vol.II,
lists German S. Brown's marriage and says he had a daughter and threesons.
Assorted deeds recorded in Broome County Clerk's Office indicateEleazer
Brown III sold all or some of his land to sons: Hiram, Chauncey C., PelegM.,
German S., Jerome B. and Eleazer IV. The lands were located betweenChenango
and Conklin, in what is now Binghamton, Broome County, New York. Theproperties apparently were located on the north side of the SusquahannaRiver.
Details of the completed transactions, with lands being deeded back
and forth, various mortgages, etc., are found on Film 573101, Liber 40,
Page 390 (two transactions, same date Dec. 23, 1853, with German S.deeding
some land to Eleazer); Film 573104, Liber. 46, Page 485, Sept. 8, 1856,two

Isaac D. Lyon and his wife Ruth.

1855 N.Y. census taken June 14 lists age as 36, b. Herkimer Co.,landowner, farmer, lived 22 years in town. Found in census afterBinghamton. Says Caroline M. had lived in town for 11 years. Since yearof her marriage? It also says she was born in Pennsylvania. (Wood FamilyIndex indicates born in New Milford.) Census says children all born inBroome Co.
Most of the information re the Brown family lineage from Edward Brownedown through German S. Brown, his brothers and sisters and some of their
children comes from Brown Genealogy, Volumes I and II.

    Notes:
Jerome had a wife named Delia C., according to land records and alsothe 1855
census. That census (Line 29, Binghamton, enumerated on June 14) listedages for
both as 29 and both born in Herkimer Co. Brown says Delia Harrington.Census
sez Jerome born in 1819. Said Jerome had lived 21 years in Binghamton andDelia
eight years. She a second wife, since oldest child is 10? Probable census
error. No occupation for Jerome but an unreadable one for his wife. 1855
census lists three kids: Hiram, 10; Herman, 8; Hamilton, 6. BrownGenealogy,
Vol. II, says the third son is Burr, born in 1850, so the ages are close.Would
a man name a son Hamilton Burr? That could give a kid a splitpersonality. Down
the line are two Thur Browns. I'll call him Hamilton Burr/Thur Brown andlet his
    descendants figure it out.

B.G., Vol II, says Jerome later married, at Baltimore, a widow withtwo
    daughters.

    Notes:
Eleazer IV's wife was Rachel Cafferty. A Rachel M. Brown died May 18,1911.
Listed in the Broome County Surrogate Court records. Film No. 809370.

1855 Census (Film 809,005, found after Binghamton, enumerated June 1)
says he was a railroad worker. 1850 census says he was a farmer, and
1860 says he was a laborer.
Also, the 1855 census said he had lived in town (Chenango?) for 22years.

Brown, Vol.2, says born 14 Feb. 1820. Doesn't jibe with census whichmakes
birth date about 1824, but that conflicts with reported 1824 birth date
    listed for sister Martha Frances.
