THE BROWN GENEALOGY, by Cyrus Henry Brown, pages 10, 12.
Four of the children of Thomas Browne remained in MA, while three ofthem came to Stonington, CT, before 1688. They purchased and receivedlarge tracts of land most of which was located in the present town ofNorth Stonington, bounded as follows: the western boundary was nearly allon Ossekonk Swamp, the northern bounds of which extended from theOssekonk brook on the west on Shunnock River on the east, joining on thenorth the lands of the late Stephen Avery and lands of the Maine family,to the lands of the Randall family; eaterly on the Randall land to theRichardson's possessions; on the south by the Palmer family land andMiner territory; and on the west by the Wheeler family land up to thesaid Ossekonk Swamp.
    Eleazer Brown, b. Lynn MA, Aug 5, 1670; d. Stonington CT, now NorthStonington, Nov 30, 1734. m. Ann Pendleton, Oct. 18, 1693.
His house stood in the eastern part of the lands purchased by theBrown brothers, about twenty-five rods south of the Brown Cemetery, andnorth of the Miner Meeting-house. Headstones were erected to their gravesby the late Daniel Brown (386). Probably these were the first intermentsin these grounds. He was a farmer and stock-raiser.

says Aug. 5. Brown Genealogy, Vols. I and II, says Aug. 4.
Another source says Aug. 15. Brown lists the marriage and death datesand
place of birth. Wheeler confirms the Aug. 4 death date. Bible recordscopied
from older records (Found on Film 862,766, Vol. 10, Page 9), confirm the
marriage and death dates. Am. Marriage Records confirm marriage date.

Gravestone, apparently erected well after his death, reads:
    Eleazer

    Thomas Brown
    of Lynn, Mass.
    Born Aug. 5, 1670
    Died Nov. 30, 1734

Eleazer and his older brothers, Thomas and John, sold theirposssessions
in Reading, MA, and came to Connecticut "at maturity" sometime after1677. They
purchased adjacent farms near Browne's Mountain in what is now North
Stonington. Their cattle marks were recorded in May 1688. Eleazer waslisted in
B.G. as "engaged in farming and stock-raising." He resided in Westerly,Rhode

although it was deeded in his name.

THE BROWN GENEALOGY, Vol. I, Boston, The Everett Press Company 1907, byCyrus Henry Brown, page 12, 14.
James Brown (38), son of Eleazer (11) and Ann (Pendleton) Brown, born Stonington, Conn., July 1, 1696. He died Feb. 2, 1750, agefifty-five years. He married Elizabeth Randall, May 5, 1718, by Rev.James Noyes, of Stonington. She was born July 4, 1696 and died Aug. 25,1786, age ninety-one years. Internment in Brown Cemetery. His wife,Elizabeth, was the daughter of John Randall and Abigail ___, whose familyname and birth does not appear on record. She was the granddaughter ofJohn Randall, the progenitor of the Randall family of Westerly, RI, andStonington, Conn. His name first appears at Newport, RI from which placehe came to Westerly as early as 1667, where the remainder of his life wasspent. The Randall land was about four miles northeast of StoningtonBorough, known as Angwilla and considered the finest land of the town. These lands join on the north the lands of Thomas Brown (2), and havebeen in the Randall name as late as 1875. These farms now, in 1906, aremostly owned by Elias Miner (1164) and his sons. The Randall familieswere highly respected and progressive, ranking high in moral character, and prominent citizens of the town.

THE BROWN GENEALOGY, Vol. 2, by Cyrus Henry Brown, pp. 241.
It must be remembered that when James Brown was born the country wasin a primitive state, almost a vast wilderness. His father, Eleazer, withhis axe, had begun to let in the sunshine in a few places, and to stirthe virgin soil and scatter a little seed, making an opening for futuresettlers. James Brown built his house on lands first set off to hisfather, Eleazer (11), on the most beautiful situation of any of the landspurchased by the three Brown brothers. This house built by James Brownwas located opposite what is now the Union Cemetery. The compilerremembers the old, old house from 1840 to 1845, which soon after was torndown. It was a one-story house, fronting south, with east end frontingthe country road. The house and barn were built of native lumber, sawedat the mill erected by his father, and assisted by the older son,Jonathan and James, the subject of this sketch. The barn fell down beforethe house was pulled down.
The house contained but four rooms on the first floor; there mighthave been an attic. The compiler was in and out of these during fiveyears of his boyhood. The house stood on a gradual sloping plateau, affording a most picturesque view for miles around. The land is rich andfertile. The father of the compiler hired the land for a number of years, and on the same the compiler worked for five years. After the house wasremoved, the well covered, and grounds cleared and leveled off, there wasnot a thing to show the spot where these illustrious children were born.

Vitals, Brown Genealogy and Wheeler's History of Stonington agree onEleazer Junior's birth date and place.
Wheeler: Married Temperance Holmes in 1723.
Film 1,309,871, Item 2, page 69: Names birth dates of children andsays earmarks were entered 26 April 1738. No marriage recorded.
Film 2826: Gives baptismal date. Stonington First Church. Admitted tochurch in what is now North Stonington on May 7, 1727.
    Film 547,548, Item 2: Baptized 14 Aug. 1698.
Film 5,080, Item 1: Records from 1727 to 1827. This church opened in1727. Lists baptisms for six of Eleazer's children: Eleazer, Jeremiah,Mary, Rebecca, Temperance, and Peleg. In each case his wife was calledMary.
Brown, p266, cites New London Probate Records, Vol. G, p. 179, 2Dec.1757. Heirs mentioned: Widow Mary Brown (indicating a second wife)Jeremiah Brown, 2nd son (1st son Nathan died at the age of 2); Eleazer, first son; John Butler and wife Mary, eldest daughter; Rebeckah, thirddaughter; Timothy, third son; John, fourth son; Peleg, fifth son; ComfortBrown and wife Temperance, second daughter; Phebe Brown, fourth daughter;Ruth Brown, fifth daughter.
The Brown Cemetery in North Stonington has no grave recorded for thisEleazer or his wives. The Stonington Historical Society reports: "Quiteoften before the 1770's they used only a crude fieldstone to mark agrave. Head-
stones were for the really well-to-do or the well-organized." Thegravestones for Eleazer and Ann Pendleton Brown were erected many yearsafter their deaths by a descendant. This could account for Ann's birthdate info on the
tombstone not jibing with other sources.
Stonington Cemeteries, film 3,096: A Mary Brown died 20 Nov. 1785,Cemetery 47, p353. Stonington Historical Society reports this Mary Brownwas the daughter of Stephen and Hannah Brown. Apparently she nevermarried.
Wheeler in Brown section of his book says Eleazer Brown and TemperanceHolmes, both of Stonington, were married in 1723. In the Holmes section,he says a Temperance Holmes, born 29 Jan. 1707, daughter of Joshua, married (1) 10 May 1727 John Smith and (2) James Treadway. Joshua livedin what is now North Stonington. [Apparently two Temperance Holmes.]Colonial Families of America, Vol. 4, page 467, says a Temperance, daughter of Joshua Holmes, born 29 Jan. 1707, married John Smith ofGroton 10 May 1727. He was born 14 June 1704 and died 22 Dec. 1758. [Seenotes for this Temperance Holmes, RIN 97. She died after 10 Dec. 1761.That was the day she married her second husband--many years after theother Temperance had presumably died.]]
Brown Genealogy has the same info as Wheeler in his Brown section, butformer says info is from Stonington town records. Both say Eleazer andTemperance were married in 1723.
An IGI record gives a 1 June 1728 (typo?) marriage date, married inStonington Township. Everett Hall Pendleton says they were married in1723 and that Temperance was Eleazer's first wife and Mary ________ washis second.
Mary was on the scene 14 Nov. 1736, according to records of the NorthStonington Congregational Church. Rebecca was born 19 Jan. 1735--22months earlier. That date is from two films on Stonington vitals. Browngenealogy and Wheeler say 19 June 1735. Transcribing error? June becameJan or Jan became June. Assuming Mary was Eleazer's second wife, shewould be the mother of Phebe, Timothy, John, Peleg and Ruth (all bornbetween
4 July 1737 and 27 June 1749). Temperance Brown, presumably, would be thedaughter of Temperance (Holmes) Brown. Jeremiah and Rebecca probably werethe children of Temperance also, but one or both could be Mary's, sincewe have found no marriage record for Eleazer and Mary. [I will allot thechildren through Rebecca to Temperance.]

Regardless, it appears Mary was my Peleg's mother.

Records of Rev. Joseph Fish of the Congregational Church of NorthStonington say Eleazer II was a church member before 1 July 1733 and hiswife Mary was received into the church and baptized 24 Oct. 1742. It alsosays Eleazer II and wife Mary "received baptism" 14 Nov. 1736, same dayas five Brown children. Church records state that Eleazer, Jeremiah,Rebecca, Mary and Temperance were baptized 14 Nov. 1736 and werechildren of Eleazer Brown and wife Mary and that Peleg Brown, son ofEleazer and wife Mary, was baptized 16 Dec. 1744.

[North Stonington Church records also say an Eleazer Brown of Westerly,R.I., married Sarah Die, 10 Nov. 1742. This, according to Everett HallPendleton, was Eleazer, son of Jonathan Brown and Elizabeth Pendleton, who probably died in the French and Indian War.]

Wheeler cites New London Probate Records, Vol. G, p. 170, 2 Dec. 1757.(This doesn't jibe with the tombstone death date). Heirs mentioned: WidowMary Brown (indicating a second wife); Jeremiah Brown, second son (firstson Nathan died at the age of 2); Eleazer, first son; John Butler andwife Mary, eldest daughter; Rebeckah, third daughter; Timothy, third son;John, fourth son; Peleg, fifth son; Comfort Brown and wife Temperance, second daughter; Phebe Brown, fourth daughter; Ruth Brown, fifthdaughter.

A Stonington deed, info from John Henderson, says Lt. John Ashcraftsold a
small quantity of Stonington land to Elizor Brown. This was mentioned ina land record dated 15 June 1717 in which Ashcraft sold a tract of land, less the small quantity previously sold to "Elizor" Brown, to PeterBelton of Groton. The Elizor could refer to either Eleazer Brown Jr. orSr.
