Buried in Tew Cemetery, Vickery, Sandusky County, Ohio.
James Bradshaw died in Vickery, Ohio in a strange accident. According to the Sandusky Register (November 3, 1901), he went to Sandusky with two horse-drawn wagons to purchase wood with a neighbor, S.M. Stevens, his son, George (my paternal great-grandfather), and a grandson. They got to town about 9:00am and had the lumber loaded. They spent the day having "a good time and several drinks." They started home at 5:00pm. George and the grandson left first and got home safely. James and the neighbor drove home and stopped in Venice to have another drink at Neuchler's Saloon. As they were driving home, Mr. Stevens asked a question, got no response from James, and turned to find that he had fallen off the wagon (literally), apparently. He was found lying in the road, unconscious. Dr. Schimansky came but James was beyond help. The death was ruled accidental and was due to James being run over by the wagon. The article says, "He was a man of about 55 years of ageand leaves a wife and grown-up family to mourn his death. He is a member of the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic - an organization for Union Civil War Veterans) and was a well known and highly respected citizen of Vickery."
James served in the Ohio National Guard during the Civil War for a term of 4 months (called the 100 day call up). He enlisted at age 26 in Sandusky County, Ohio on 5-2-1864. He served as a private in the 139th Ohio National Guard and was discharged on 8-26-1864.
