- Michael B. FOSTER, @ b. 1778, Watch Hill,, Rhode Island; d. Aug 1824, Brooklyn Village, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA.
Notes:
Foster/Forester : In the English Middle Ages, the forests and woods were almost always owned or controlled by the lord of the manor -- but people had no reservations about sneaking in and taking firewood, game, or whatever else they might require. To keep the poaching to a minimum, the lord retained a man to watch the forest -- often called a Forester, and sometimes called a Foster. The name stuck as an English Occupation surname when they became adopted.
Abigail and Michael had ELEVEN children when they arrived in Brooklyn, Ohio.
It was the convention of the times to use the mother's maiden name as the middle name for a child. With that in mind, Michael B. Foster was probably named Michael Billings Foster.

NOTE:
Brooklyn history, as noted in Abigail Fish Foster's notes, states that the family left Groton for Ohio in 1826. If that is the case, how then could Michael's gravestone show an internment date of 1824? My guess would be that the history is in error.

Notes:
"Memorial To The Pioneer Women Of The Western Reserve", 1896
Mentions that Abigail and Michael Foster arrived in Cuyahoga County with 11 children and specifies 5 female names (Eveline, Sally, Eunice, Nancy, and Matilda). This child's name has not appeared in any books or documents, thus far searched.
[UPDATE: The name Lydia is mentioned in a book by Ebenezer Foster, "Early Days of the Pioneers Cuyahoga County and Brooklyn Township", 1880.
"A short time after father was married, they moved about twenty miles away, rented a house somewhere between Norwich and Preston City and kept a grocery store. While there, they lost their second born, a little girl, Lydia Foster."]
- Sally FOSTER, @ (1.Michael1) b. Abt 1807, Groton, New London, Connecticut; d. Aug 1867, Brooklyn, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA.
Notes:
I originally had Sally's birth year estimated at 1813, but if her marriage date is correct, she would have been far too young to marry, especially to a man who was 45 at the time. It is more likely that she is one of the older children of Michael and Abigail and probably born prior to 1807.
MARRIAGE: She married Lathrop Pixley per LDS records in the IGI for 06 OCT 1825 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
MARRIAGE: FOSTER, SALLY and PILEY, LATHROP vol.0002 pg.0075 (Cuyahoga County Marriage Index)

Notes:
According to the Brainard Genealogy by Lucille Brainerd, he lived in Concord near Painesville, Ohio but I show him as owning and living on a parcel of land on the south side of Denison Ave east of W14th St. He appears in the 1840, 1850, and 1860 census in Brooklyn Township. I am reasonably certain that her enteries in the book for Concord are an error. All of his children would have been born in Brooklyn and not Concord as she states. She also says that Charles W. is adopted. I have no further information on him.

Notes:
The FamilySearchâ„¢ International Genealogical Index v5.0 provides an estimated birth year of 1810 and place as Hinckley, Medina, Ohio. That location seems unlikely because her father is listed in the 1820 census in Groton, Connecticut. Another entry estimates her birth for 1814. I've chosen to use that one since her brother, Ebenezer was born in 1810.
Four children.

The 1860 Census has a couple, Albert and Charlotte, and their five children living in Wingville, Grant County, Wisconsin. Albert is a stone mason. Their ages seem appropriate and two of their children are shown as having been born in Ohio. None of the children are named Alonzo, though. He would have been 15 years old in 1860. Old enough to be out on his own? The five children are named: Elizabeth (age 14 - Ohio), Naeiah E. (age 9 - Ohio), Cecilia M. (age 5 - Wisc.), Oliver L. (age3 - Wisc.), Henry B. (age 5/12 - Wisc.). If this is, in fact, the right family, then it would appear that Albert and Charlotte moved from Ohio by 1854/55.
His wife died in 1865 in Montfort, Wisconsin which is just a short distance east of Wingville.
In the 1870 Census, Albert would already be dead, but there is an Alonzo, age 25 and born in Ohio, living in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. He is a stone mason. The next name is hard to make out. Might be Jennie, age 19. Another female, age 15 named Alia. Are these siblings rather than a husband and wife?
In the 1910 Census, Alonzo is living in Boulder, Colorado with wife Dora and two sons, Wesley and Wilber. Dora is shown as being the mother of 5, with 5 still living though only two are living with them.
RESIDENCES:
1850 - Brooklyn, Cuyahoga, Ohio (probably on Newburgh St -- now Denison Ave.)
1860 - Wingville, Grant, Wisconsin (probably moved here about 1854)
1867 - Mt. Vernon, Black Hawk, Iowa (probably moved here in 1865, after his wife died, to be with his son)

Notes:
SOURCE_OF_NAME: At the time of the 1850 Census, there is no Julia listed with for Lathrop and Sally Foster ( though she may be living elsewhere), but by the time of the 1870 Census, she is shown living with Leonard Pixley and his wife, Alice. She is listed simply as Julia, so the assumption is made that she is a Pixley. She is about 6 years older than Leonard, so may have been born in 1829. If so, it means her mother may only have been 16-17 years old at the time she was born. An alternative theory is that she was the wife of one of Leonard's brothers who has passed on so she came to live with her in-laws.

Notes:
BIOGRAPHY: Hanna A. FOSTER, daughter of Betsey HULET FOSTER, should not be omitted from this memorial, originated and sponsored by Cleveland women, with whom she has long been intimately associated, and by whom she is admired and loved. A valued member of the Ohio Woman’s Press Club, a poet of more than local reputation, gentle, refined, and unselfish to the degree of immolation, her life has been one of devotion to others. At the celebration of Cleveland’s Centennial birthday, she easily won the prize offered for the best written ode for the occasion. As non de plumes were signed to all the poems, the judges had no idea to whom they belonged until after a decision had been reached.
Miss FOSTER’s dainty verse and prose have not only graced the pages of print, but have contributed much to the pleasure of church anniversaries and college reunions in the town in which she resides.

Notes:
BIOGRAPHY: FOSTER, LEONARD GURLEY (10 Sept. 1840-13 Dec. 1937) was a CIVIL WAR veteran whose avocation brought him the epithet, "the Buckeye poet." Born on the family homestead in the Cuyahoga Valley near Denison Ave., he was educated at HUMISTON INSTITUTE and Berea College. He was principal at Tremont School from 1860-64, after which he served with the 8th Ohio Battery on Johnson's Island. Foster also actively worked the family farm, which inspired many of his verses on nature. A veteran of the first Chautauqua meeting in 1874, he remained active in the movement as a speaker and contributor of poetry. He wrote an estimated 80,000 verses in his lifetime, including 47 volumes of poems in manuscript which he presented to the WESTERN RESERVE HISTORICAL SOCIETY His published volumes included Whisperings of Nature (1893) and The Early Days: A Pioneer Idyl (1911). Many of his poems were also published in the CLEVELAND NEWS and the CLEVELAND TIMES (1922) . He was the first clerk of the Brooklyn Village council and the second last survivor of the Brooklyn Post, G.A.R. Married to Lyde Holmden, Foster was survived by one of their 3 children. His brothers Edwin J. and Henry E. were Cleveland lawyers, the former having published verse and the latter a 1900 political campaign tract. His sister Hanna Alice Foster was a temperance worker and poet as well.
BIOGRAPHY: First village recorder for Brooklyn Village (Centre), Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
BIOGRAPHY: Note -- there seems to be some confusion about the siblings of these Foster poets. See notes for Edwin J. Foster (son of Nathan Foster) for further mention of this problem. Leonard, the son of Ebenezer who lived near Denison Ave., would have been born in the location as stated above, but to my knowledge, there were no siblings named Henry or Hanna, while Nathan Foster did have children with those names, but no Leonard. Very confusing.

Notes:
The 1860 Census has a couple, Albert and Charlotte, and their five children living in Wingville, Grant County, Wisconsin. Albert is a stone mason. Their ages seem appropriate and two of their children are shown as having been born in Ohio. None of the children are named Alonzo, though. He would have been 15 years old in 1860. Old enough to be out on his own? The five children are named: Elizabeth (age 14), Naeiah E. (age 9), Cecilia M. (age 5), Oliver L. (age3), Henry B. (age 5/12).

Notes:
BIOGRAPHY: FOSTER, CLAUD HANSCOMB (23 Dec. 1872-21 June 1965), automotive inventor, industrialist, and philanthropist, was born in the Cleveland suburb of Brooklyn to George and Julia Wells Foster. In 1891, he opened a machine shop, playing the trombone for 11 years in the Euclid Ave. Opera House orchestra to support his business. In 1896, Foster became an automobile dealer, selling the Cleveland-built General, in 1900 also acquiring Peerless and Ajax automobile agencies. Foster developed the Gabriel Horn, a multitone automobile horn powered by exhaust gases, starting the successful Gabriel Co. in 1904. Foster then patented his "Snubber" automotive shock absorber in 1914, capitalizing its production at $1 million.
From 1920-25, the Gabriel Co. earned annual profits of more than $1 million, selling 75% of all shock absorbers marketed in the world. Foster developed an employee profit-sharing incentive program, between 1917-25 paying his employees more than $600,000 in addition to their salaries. He sold the Gabriel Co. in 1925 to Otis & Co. for $4 million, only half the company's evaluated price, and remaining the company's chairman 1928.
Known as the "Doctor of Car Riding," Foster was often consulted by manufacturers when new car models developed riding difficulties. Throughout his career, Foster made numerous large anonymous gifts to hospitals and charitable institutions. On 22 July 1952, he announced to the heads of 16 educational and charitable institutions that he was dividing the bulk of his wealth, almost $4 million, among them. Married to Emma Schultz on 2 May 1894, Foster had 2 sons, Earl and Daniel. Foster is buried in RIVERSIDE Cemetery.
-----------------
Gabriel Snubbers -- This consisted of a housing that contained a belt wound into a coil. It was kept under tension by a spring. The housing was fastened to the frame and the outer end of the belt was attached to the axle to limit the degree of rebound from a jolt.l Co. started operation in 1906 making accessory auto horns. The founder, Claude H. Foster, named his firm after the horn-tooting angel Gabriel. When the pushbutton horn came along in 1914, it killed the Gabriel and all other body-mounted horns. Foster looked for a product to keep his company in business and came across the Snubber.
---------------------
Claud H. Foster loved to tinker with things. He loved to put things together and take things apart. He did this well with automobiles, except for one thing: the horn. So he decided to invent a fool-proof horn using the concept of a trombone, calling it "Gabriel's Horn." He started the Gabriel Company from $1,500 he had saved up. The time came when he decided to retire. An investment firm offered him $10 million for the company. But he knew if he took their bid, a lot of stock holders in his company would lose their money. He also knew that because of some expiring patents, it wasn't worth that much money. He said this, "Over the years I have come to realize that nothing we earn, none of the things we accumulate belongs to us. While on this earth we are merely stewards or trustees for God's resources." So Mr. Foster decided to sell his company for the fairer price of $4 million. He had such joy and peace doing that, that he decided to do something else. He threw a big party with his friends who worked in an orphanage and in a hospital. Then that night he gave the $4 million dollars away. He said he has never regretted it, and has found great peace and thankfulness in his life just thinking about it. He said it was "the best party I ever had." There is a joy and peace that comes in giving to others.

OCCUPATION: President of the General Industries Co. of Elyria
OBIT:
WILLIAM EARL FOSTER, 85, of Key Largo, FL, and Linville Ridge, NC, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2007. Mr. Foster was born Nov. 23, 1921, in Toronto, Canada. In 1933 he moved with his family to Elyria, OH, which would become his home for much of his life. He had a very happy and active childhood, and it was during this time that he learned to bird hunt from his grandfather Claude Foster, with whom he enjoyed an especially close relationship. Mr. Foster graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1941. He credited Culver with teaching him the discipline and honor which would serve him well for the remainder of his life. In 1942 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army's field artillery. He subsequently joined the Army Air Corps where he served as a pilot and flight instructor for the remainder of the war. After his discharge, Mr. Foster took a job as a stock chaser at General Industries in Elyria, where he quickly ascended the ranks to become President in 1957. During his 15-year tenure the company flourished, increasing sales 10-fold and becoming the largest custom molder of plastics in the country. He served on the boards of many local businesses including the National City Bank of Cleveland, the Elyria Telephone Company, the Kasper Foundry Company and the Elyria Company. A major theme in Mr. Foster's life was serving his community. He was president of the Lorain County Sheriff's Advisory Council, the Elyria Country Club, the Lorain County Community Foundation, the Cleveland Chapter of the Young President's Organization and the Ocean Reef Art League. He also served as commander of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and as chairman of the Card Sound Sailing Club race committee. Mr. Foster was preceded in death by his son, William E. Foster Jr. who died serving his country in Vietnam, his wife, Mary Jo Foster and his parents, Earl and Frances Foster. He is survived by his wife, Elsie Foster, his brother, Donald Foster, his three children, and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Key Largo Anglers Club at a later date
