After learning the trade in Philadelphia, he openeda tailoring business in Matawan, N.J. and was Postmaster of Matawan at the timeof his death. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Matawan. Hewas a trustee of the Middle District public school in Matawan and President ofthe Board of Trustees of Glenwood Institute. During his funeral services the stores and other places of business in Matawan were closed.
