Selwin Babcock was born about 1820 in New York and died on the 21st of June in 1896. He was the 2nd husband of Philena Rooker Holmden whom he married on June 29, 1865 about 7 months after the death of her 1st husband, Walter Holmden.

For a time he was probably a farmer but as noted below when he was of retirement age he was a piano tuner. There is a Selwin Babcock in the 1860 census living in Syracuse, N.Y. whose occupation is listed as melodeon maker. This was a type of organ. There is a chance that this is the same Selwin prior to his arrival in Cleveland.

An 1891 city directory lists Selwin as a piano tuner at 145 Newburgh St. with a his residence at 236 Newburgh. Both addresses are in the old style that existed prior to 1906. The 1907 city directory lists Philena living at 3715 Denison.

Their home, as shown in a very early illustration, was located in Original Lot 56. The deed states that the sellers were A.B. and Lydia Haight. The property description gives a size of 18 1/2 rods x 40 rods which is 305' x 600' on Rockport Road between Wm. Alcott on the east and Stephen Brainard on the west and Stephen Brainard/Ozias Fish on the south. Rockport was later renamed to Denison Avenue. The same deed also describes an additional piece of land of about 10 acres but the actual location is difficult to read. It seems to adjoin the Brainard/Fish land.
